Deck Construction FAQs

What makes a deck durable?

A durable deck starts with a solid foundation, properly sized framing, secure connections, and good water management. Our typical approach uses 6×6 pressure-treated posts set in concrete, with concrete rings around the posts to help keep the deck structure separated from the ground.

When the deck’s elevation and grade allow, we prefer 2×10 pressure-treated framing. When site conditions call for a lower profile, 2×8 framing may be appropriate. We also use double beams and double rim joists as part of our standard framing approach. Final sizing depends on the deck design and required spans.

For wood decking, joists are commonly spaced 16 inches on center, subject to the board and framing specifications. For our composite builds, we use 12-inch spacing as our standard. Some Trex installations allow 16-inch spacing when boards run perpendicular to the joists, while diagonal layouts call for 12-inch spacing. We follow the requirements for the selected decking product and layout.

Decks need the correct exterior-rated nails, screws, and bolts for each connection. We use joist hangers at the ledger, with the fasteners specified for the hanger and installation. Where the design calls for them, we use hurricane ties and carriage bolts. Railing posts also need secure, properly designed connections. We do not rely on generic screws for critical structural connections.

Decks need lateral stability. Under the North Carolina Residential Code, an attached deck under 4 feet high may qualify for an exception to additional lateral bracing; taller decks need an approved stability method based on their design. Guards are generally required where the deck surface is more than 30 inches above the grade below within 36 inches of the edge. The minimum guard height for a typical residential deck is 36 inches.

The ledger must be fastened securely to the home’s structural framing, with the correct connection details for the house and deck. We install proper flashing above the ledger to help keep water from entering the wall. The joists are supported with hangers attached to the ledger.

We can protect the tops of the framing with FastenMaster Deck Frame Coating or Trex Protect joist and beam tape, depending on the project and the homeowner’s preference. Beneath the deck, we recommend a weed barrier and gravel, along with proper grading, drainage, and ventilation. These steps help manage moisture and protect the structure.

Wood costs less upfront, but it needs regular maintenance. Plan to clean and stain a wood deck at least once a year with a transparent or semi-transparent stain, which adds ongoing material and labor costs. Composite costs more upfront because the materials cost more and installation takes more time. It needs much less routine care. With aluminum or PVC railings, maintenance is generally clearing leaves and cleaning the surface occasionally. If algae appears, use a cleaner made for the decking and follow its instructions.

We take care to make clean, professional cuts and finish the edges neatly. Depending on the design, we can add details such as picture framing or angled board layouts. These patterns can require extra framing or blocking, so we plan for them before installation.

Deck cost depends on size, height, framing, stairs, railings, demolition needs, and whether you choose wood or composite. We provide a project-specific estimate after reviewing the layout and materials. Deck Company of Charlotte serves Charlotte and nearby communities, including Matthews, Wesley Chapel, Waxhaw, Indian Trail, and Weddington.
